What is actually happening — and why the method matters
Order matters on a combined job for a concrete reason: siding wash runoff — dirt, cleaning solution residue, and dead algae rinsing off the house — runs down across window glass. Cleaning the glass first just means redoing it after the siding wash, which is why siding always comes before windows on any job that includes both.
Hard water spots come from sprinkler overspray depositing dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and lime, on the glass. When the water evaporates, the minerals stay behind. Fresh deposits wipe away with a normal wash, but repeated exposure over months or years lets those minerals lightly etch the glass surface — at that point a standard cleaning will not fully remove them, and they need a mineral-specific treatment instead.
Screens and tracks are cleaned separately from the glass because they collect different debris — a fine mesh of pollen and dust on screens that a glass cleaning does not touch, and dirt plus moisture in the tracks. Neglected tracks are also one of the more common places a window seal eventually fails, since trapped moisture and debris sit against the frame far longer than they would on open glass.
